Jazz Lick #3 (Minor ii V)

by Dan Palladino

This lick is in the key of C minor. This will definitely be useful in a jazz context, but will also work over any tunes that use the C Harmonic Minor scale.

Jazz standards tend to contain many ii-V progressions. In the case of tunes in minor keys, ii = D-7(b5), V = G7(b9), i = C- [or C-7, C-6, C-(maj7)]. Notice that this lick ends on the note "D", which is the tension "9" on the C-9 chord. Happy shedding! --DP
