Lunar Currents, my third ambient release, was conceived as a single multi-part piece, which draws the listener into a series of cinematic musical environments. It all began with me discovering the descending synth progression which opens "Anticipation". I've always been more of an "ear" musician than a pencil-on-paper kind of guy, so I simply followed my ear to move from one section to the next. In doing so, my ear spoke to me about the emotion of each environment.
After the resolution of "Anticipation", I felt a certain loneliness. I carried the meandering piano into the next environment, and "Separation" was born. "Passage" felt like a drive to persevere, hence the bolero-like snare ensemble. I began imagining a story as I moved through the piece, and that told me which sounds should be featured next. I won't tell you what the story is - you should make up your own.
"Redemption", with its pulsating synth bass and searching octave guitar cries, deliver both a building tension and final resolution, recalling the harmony and themes presented at the beginning of the album.
The final track, "Release", is the epilogue of the set and delivers a hopeful conclusion to the album. It was written not long after the passing of keyboardist/composer and Pat Metheny Group co-founder, Lyle Mays in 2020, and is my tribute to him. I consider myself fortunate to have been around while Lyle was creating such incredible music. Thank you, Lyle!
I hope Lunar Currents helps you escape the trials of everyday life and takes you to a musical sanctuary filled with peace.
Happy listening!
